His truck runs out of gas on the way, and he frightens a boy and assaults the boy's mother before stealing her car. Otis torments Denise using the skin of her dead father's face as a mask. Mary attempts to run away, but is tracked down and stabbed to death by Baby moments later. He is presumably the father of Mama Firefly, previously known as Gloria Teasdale. She, in turn, is the biological mother of Baby, Rufus, and Tiny, as well as the presumed adoptive mother of Otis, whose last name was previously Driftwood. Captain Spaulding and Mama are Baby's parents, making her the half-sister of Rufus and Tiny. Not long after, Otis creates a work of art out of Bill's body, Mary is tied up in a barn, Denise is dressed as a doll, and Jerry is scalped. That’s exactly why it appealed to McClelland, who went out and bought the DVD—“the very first one, where it was just a cardboard flip cover without a clasp”—as soon as he could. He quickly began marshaling people over to his apartment to hold screenings.

Obsessed with finding the tree where a mob allegedly lynched the mass murderer, Jerry begs Spaulding for hand-drawn directions and coerces the group to drive out in search of it in an oncoming storm after Denise rang and told her dad they will be late. On the way, much to the women's reluctance, the foursome pick up a beautiful, but eccentric hitchhiker who later calls herself Baby and claims she lives not far from the tree. She offers to lend shelter to the four when their tire flattens under mysterious circumstances.
